Montenegro’s Efforts Towards Sustainable Development and Green Economy

Montenegro has made significant efforts towards sustainable development and the green economy. In December 2015, the government adopted the National Strategy for Sustainable Development (NSSD) until 2030, which focuses on various aspects of sustainable development, including the introduction of a green economy, strengthening the efficiency of natural resource use, climate change, conservation of sensitive ecosystems and coastal areas and sustainable production and consumption. The NSSD is structured into five priority themes including— preservation of natural capital, governance, and finance for sustainable development.
Montenegro has also taken steps to address climate change. In 2019, the country adopted a law on protection from the negative impacts of climate change, which regulates the implementation of measures necessary to establish a comprehensive system for addressing climate change. Montenegro has also made efforts to raise public awareness on climate change and promote sustainable mobility.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been working in Montenegro to promote inclusive and green growth, protect nature, and encourage green growth. The UNDP has piloted and scaled up initiatives to protect nature, promote sustainable use of resources, and encourage green growth. The organization has also focused on strengthening resilience to climate-driven disasters and accelerating sustainable development.
Montenegro has also been working to become a party to the Protocol to Abate Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone (Gothenburg Protocol) under the Air Convention. The country has implemented short- and long-term measures to reduce emissions and mitigate the negative impacts of air pollution.
