Energy - Trends

The energy sector or industry includes companies involved in the exploration and development of oil or gas reserves, oil and gas drilling, and refining. The energy industry also includes integrated power utility companies such as renewable energy and coal. Energy is an all-encompassing term that includes many complex and inter-related companies which are either directly and indirectly involved in either production or distribution of energy. The companies that are involved in the energy production, do so using multiple methods which can be categorised as either renewable or non-renewable.

Some of the Non-renewable Energy sources are Petroleum products and oil, Natural gas, Gasoline, Diesel fuel, Heating oil, Nuclear and Coal.

Some of the Renewable energy sources Hydropower Biofuels, such as ethanol; Wind power, Solar power, Hydroelectric

These energy sources are used to generate secondary source of energy like Heat, Steam, Electricity etc.

The Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) breaks down the energy sector into two industries: “energy equipment and services” and “oil, gas, and consumable fuels.”

There are various sub-sectors under Energy sector, Oil and gas drilling, Oil and gas equipment & services, Integrated oil and gas, Oil and gas exploration & production, Oil and gas refining & marketing, Oil and gas storage & transportation, Coal and consumable fuels.

Historically it’s been the non-renewable sources of energy that has fulfilled all our energy needs post industrialisation period, but that has now come under major scrutiny due to the adverse impact that it has on environment and a major cause of harmful emission leading to climate change. Thus, to combat the ill-effects, Energy transition has become a major focus of all industries and institutions. This includes both energy production and distribution companies as well.
